CHP Investigating Freeway Shooting on I-880 in Oakland; One Person Hospitalized

OAKLAND, Calif. — A Thursday afternoon freeway shooting on Interstate 880 left one person hospitalized and prompted a major law enforcement response, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. on the southbound lanes of I-880, just south of 66th Avenue. CHP officials confirmed that the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. As of Thursday evening, the victim’s condition has not been released.

Authorities said no suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting, and the circumstances leading up to the gunfire remain under investigation. It is not yet clear whether the incident was a targeted attack, a case of road rage, or a random act of violence.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, CHP shut down all southbound lanes of I-880 around 3:15 p.m. to secure the scene and collect evidence. The closure caused significant traffic backups in and around Oakland, as commuters were forced to reroute during the busy afternoon hours. The freeway was fully reopened by 4:25 p.m.

Investigators towed away a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident, though officials have not specified whether it belonged to the victim or was connected to the suspect. Evidence markers were placed along the roadway as CHP crime scene units combed the area for shell casings and other potential leads.

The shooting adds to a series of violent incidents across the Bay Area in recent weeks, including a separate case where an Oakland security guard exchanged gunfire with masked suspects, leading to a crash in Hayward. While the two incidents are not officially linked, both underscore heightened concerns about brazen acts of violence on public roadways.

CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the I-880 shooting or who may have relevant information to contact their investigative tip line at 707-917-4491.

For now, authorities continue to urge caution and vigilance, noting that freeway shootings pose extreme risks not only to intended targets but also to nearby drivers and passengers caught in the crossfire.
