Colten Todd Hagaman, 27, Remembered as a Loving Father and Outdoorsman After Battle with Depression
The family of Colten Todd “Cole” Hagaman is heartbroken to share that he lost his battle with depression this week at the young age of 27. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of all who knew him. Cole was a gentle, lovable, and considerate soul—a “burly bear of a man” with a big smile that lit up every room he entered. He will be greatly missed.
A Joyful Spirit and Excited Fatherhood
Cole’s life was marked by warmth, humor, and a contagious zest for life. Upon learning that he was going to be a father, Cole embraced the coming change with an open heart. He grew in love and responsibility as he prepared for the arrival of his son, Braxten Todd, cherishing the opportunity to step into fatherhood. Those close to him watched as he transformed, savoring every moment of anticipation and welcoming his new role with pride.
A Man of the Outdoors
From a young age, Cole found peace, freedom, and connection in nature. He cherished time spent on the family farm in Nottoway County, where he hunted, explored, and reflected in the quiet of the woods. The outdoors became his sanctuary, a place where he could connect deeply with the world around him.
Cole’s love for hunting naturally extended into the kitchen. His meals—always flavored with elaborate seasonings and an eclectic soundtrack of classic rock and country—were reflections of his personality: bold, flavorful, and full of life. A blessing before meals often included his signature words: “Thank you, Lord, for the tasty critters on earth and in the sky.”
A Faith That Anchored Him
Cole lived by the guidance of his faith. His daily life was filled with scripture and prayer, and two verses were especially meaningful to him. One was Genesis 9:3: “Everything that lives and moves about shall be food for you.” The other, inscribed on his body as a tattoo, was Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” These verses carried him through life’s highs and lows, grounding him in God’s promises.
A Life of Curiosity and Connection
Cole was also known for his fascination with heavy equipment, a passion he had from an early age. He often took things apart—though not always successfully put them back together, as his mother fondly recalled. His curiosity, paired with his adventurous nature, made him both playful and inventive.
Equally important, Cole had a way of drawing people in. He gathered friends often, and his joy for life was contagious. Many remember him as the “life of the party”—always ready with a laugh, a smile, or a moment of fun.
Yet, as is true for so many who battle depression, his outward exuberance sometimes masked an inner struggle. His story is a reminder that depression is as real and pervasive as heart disease or cancer. It is a disease, not a weakness, and his family hopes that sharing his journey can help break the stigma surrounding mental health.
A Family’s Love
Cole’s passing leaves behind those who loved him most deeply:
- His significant other and love of his life, Lilah Turner
- His infant son, Braxten Todd
- His parents, Jason and Lori
- His sister Kaela and her husband Ryan
- His lifelong friend Tripp
- And a large extended family and countless friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Services and Memorials
A private service will be held to honor Cole’s life. The family is overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support from the community and asks for privacy as they grieve this devastating loss.
Plans for a public celebration of Cole’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a trust fund being established at Benchmark Bank (in care of Susan Jenkins) for his infant son, Braxten Todd Hagaman.
Forever Remembered
In his short 27 years, Colten Todd Hagaman brought immense joy, love, and laughter to those blessed to know him. His presence was larger than life, his heart full of kindness, and his faith steadfast. While his journey ended far too soon, his spirit will live on in the memories shared, the lives he touched, and the son he adored.
May Cole’s story also serve as a reminder of the importance of compassion, understanding, and awareness for those battling depression. His legacy will forever be remembered with love.
