Fatal Three-Vehicle Crash on I-40 in Johnston County Claims One Life, Charges Filed Against Two Drivers

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A fatal crash involving three vehicles brought traffic to a standstill along Interstate 40 eastbound on Thursday afternoon, leaving one woman dead and leading to charges against two drivers.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:56 p.m. near mile marker 311, close to Veterans Parkway. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the deadly chain reaction began when a blue Mini Cooper slowed in traffic. A red Ford F-150 pickup truck then struck the Mini Cooper from behind, forcing the truck onto the right shoulder. Moments later, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee also collided with the Mini Cooper.

The driver of the Mini Cooper, identified as Cheryl Elaine Boesel of Hope Mills, tragically died at the scene. Officials confirmed she was the sole occupant of her vehicle.

Investigators say the driver of the Jeep, Miriam Biviano of Raleigh, has been charged with failure to reduce speed and driving without an operator’s license. The driver of the Ford pickup, Scott Faircloth of Dunn, faces charges of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle as well as failure to reduce speed.

Trooper D.L. Barfield is leading the investigation, which remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and witness statements.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, all eastbound lanes of I-40 were closed while troopers and emergency crews worked the scene. The closure caused traffic to back up for nearly five miles, creating significant delays for commuters and travelers. Lanes were reopened later in the evening once the wreckage was cleared and investigators completed their initial assessment.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers of high-speed travel on congested interstates and the devastating consequences of failing to maintain safe driving practices. Officials with the Highway Patrol stressed the importance of keeping adequate following distance and remaining alert at all times.

Family and friends of Cheryl Elaine Boesel are now left grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss of a loved one remembered for her warmth, strength, and presence in her Hope Mills community.

As the legal process unfolds, authorities are urging motorists to drive responsibly to prevent similar tragedies.
