MT. JULIET, Tenn. – Murder Suspects Captured After Police Pursuit on I-40
Authorities in Tennessee say two suspects wanted in connection with a murder in Shelby County, Kentucky were captured in Wilson County after a dramatic police pursuit on Interstate 40 West. The successful operation, which involved coordination between multiple agencies, brought a dangerous situation to an end on Sunday.
Pursuit Sparked by License Plate Alert
The chain of events began when Lebanon Police received an alert from their license plate reader system. The system had flagged a vehicle that had been reported stolen during an armed carjacking in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 5. Officers quickly located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
Instead of complying, the suspects fled, leading police on a pursuit along I-40 West. The chase eventually came to a halt in Mt. Juliet, when the suspects abandoned the stolen car and fled on foot into a residential area.
Neighborhood Search and Arrest
With the vehicle secured, officers from multiple jurisdictions, including the Mt. Juliet Police Department, quickly set up a perimeter and began canvassing nearby neighborhoods. Residents provided critical assistance, with witnesses reporting seeing the two individuals running behind homes.
Thanks to swift coordination and the timely tips from community members, both suspects were located and taken into custody without further incident.
Suspects Identified
The suspects were later identified as:
-
Jeremiah James, 23, of Shelbyville, Kentucky (driver)
-
Madison Greenwell, 21, of Shelbyville, Kentucky (passenger)
Authorities confirmed that both James and Greenwell are wanted by Shelby County, Kentucky officials in connection with a murder case dating back to August. In addition to the murder charges, they face charges related to the carjacking and the pursuit in Tennessee.
Vehicle Recovered and Investigation Ongoing
The stolen vehicle, connected to the Louisville carjacking, was successfully recovered at the scene. Investigators are now working closely with Kentucky authorities to coordinate the extradition process and ensure that the suspects face charges in both states.
Authorities Praise Teamwork
Officials praised the swift communication and collaboration between agencies, noting that the license plate reader system, officer response, and community awareness all played crucial roles in safely apprehending the suspects.
“Today was a reminder of what can be accomplished when law enforcement and the public work together,” one Wilson County official stated. “Two dangerous individuals are now off the streets, and justice can move forward.”
Community Impact
While the incident caused temporary concern in Mt. Juliet neighborhoods, no injuries were reported during the pursuit or arrest. Residents expressed relief at the suspects’ quick capture and gratitude for the officers’ efforts to ensure community safety.
