One Dead, Two Injured in Early Morning Crash at Decatur Intersection
DECATUR, Ala. — A fatal car wreck in Decatur early Saturday morning left one man dead and two others injured after two vehicles collided at a busy intersection, according to the Decatur Police Department.
Authorities said that at approximately 6:24 a.m. on Saturday, Morgan County 911 received multiple calls reporting a serious crash at the intersection of Beltline Road SW and Carridale Street SW.
Decatur Police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel responded within minutes and found two heavily damaged vehicles blocking the roadway. First responders immediately began rendering aid to the victims.
The driver of one vehicle, Tavoras Antwan Coffman, 40, of Athens, was pronounced dead at the scene by Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn. His passenger sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to Huntsville Hospital, where they remain under treatment.
The driver of the second vehicle was also injured and transported by ambulance to Huntsville Hospital. Officials did not immediately release their name or the extent of their injuries.
Traffic in the area was diverted for several hours as investigators examined the scene and crews worked to clear the roadway. The wreck occurred in a busy section of Beltline Road, a stretch often congested with early morning traffic, adding to delays for drivers in the area.
Police have not confirmed what led to the collision. The Decatur Police Department’s Traffic Division is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash and will release additional details as they become available.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the wreck or has information about the events leading up to it to contact the Decatur Police Department.
This marks yet another serious traffic accident in Morgan County this month, as law enforcement continues to stress the importance of cautious driving, particularly in early morning and late-night hours when visibility may be reduced.
