SAN ANTONIO – Medical Examiner Identifies Victim in Wrong-Way Crash on Wurzbach Parkway
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has released the identity of the man killed in a tragic wrong-way collision early Saturday morning on the North Side.
Authorities confirmed the victim as Jonathan Marks, 37, who died at the scene after another vehicle struck his car head-on around 3:15 a.m. on Wurzbach Parkway near Starcrest Drive.
Police reports indicate that the suspect vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction when the crash occurred. The violent impact left both cars severely damaged, with debris scattered across multiple lanes. First responders worked quickly to secure the area, but Marks could not be saved.
The other driver, identified by investigators as Daniel Perez, 30, was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. According to police, hospital staff determined he was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Perez was later taken into custody and charged with intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony under Texas law.
“This is yet another heartbreaking example of the devastation impaired driving can cause,” said Sgt. Laura Martinez with the San Antonio Police Department. “One life was lost, another forever changed, and a community left grieving. These tragedies are preventable.”
Family and friends of Marks described him as a devoted father, a caring friend, and a hard worker who loved spending time outdoors. Neighbors left flowers and candles near the crash site in his memory.
The collision shut down part of Wurzbach Parkway for several hours while investigators documented the scene and cleared the wreckage. Traffic resumed later that morning, but skid marks and broken glass served as a stark reminder of the violence of the crash.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to make responsible choices, reminding the public that San Antonio has seen a sharp rise in wrong-way and alcohol-related collisions over the past year.
The case remains under investigation.
