Tragedy in Monroe County: 14-Year-Old Emma Schultheis Killed in Accidental Shooting
WATERLOO, Ill. — A heartbreaking tragedy has gripped Monroe County after the death of 14-year-old Emma Schultheis of Prairie Du Rocher, who was fatally struck by a bullet in an accidental shooting on July 21, 2025.
At approximately 1:34 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies and Monroe County EMS responded to a reported medical emergency at 5925 State Route 3 in Waterloo. Emergency responders arrived within minutes and immediately began administering CPR and other life-saving measures. Emma was quickly transported to a St. Louis-area hospital. Despite the continued efforts of medical professionals, she was later pronounced deceased.
Initial Investigation
Following the incident, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department launched an intensive investigation. The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit assisted in gathering forensic evidence and processing the scene. It was soon determined that Emma’s death was the result of a gunshot wound, setting in motion a meticulous review of the events that led to the tragedy.
Investigators interviewed witnesses, gathered forensic analysis, and coordinated with the medical examiner’s office. The comprehensive case file eventually documented more than 45 investigative leads, underscoring the complexity of the incident.
Filing of Charges
On August 26, 2025, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department concluded its investigation and submitted findings to the Monroe County State’s Attorney’s Office.
On September 2, 2025, State’s Attorney Ryan Webb issued formal charges against two individuals connected to the case.
Authorities revealed that the incident stemmed from an attempt by David Schultheis, Emma’s father, to shoot a buzzard that had flown into a brick building on the property. According to investigators, David positioned himself outside the doorway, extending only his arm into the room to fire his handgun. This was done, officials believe, in an attempt to protect himself from possible ricochet.
The bullet struck the bird, passed through it, exited the building through a window, and tragically struck Emma, who was outside at the time.
A Devastating Loss
Emma’s sudden death has devastated her family, friends, and the broader Prairie Du Rocher community. Known as a bright and kindhearted young girl, Emma had her whole future ahead of her—a life cut tragically short by a split-second decision.
Community members have expressed deep sorrow and rallied around the Schultheis family, offering prayers, condolences, and support during this unimaginable time.
“Emma was loved by everyone who knew her,” one family friend shared. “She was joyful, full of energy, and had so much promise. Her loss is something words can’t describe.”
Moving Forward
The charges filed against those connected to the incident reflect the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability, even in cases of tragic accidents. Prosecutors have emphasized that while no outcome can undo the heartbreak, the legal process is an important step toward resolution.
This case highlights the profound risks associated with firearms and the critical importance of safety and awareness in their use. For Emma’s family and community, her passing will remain a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change in a single moment.
Funeral and memorial services for Emma Schultheis have drawn widespread attendance, with mourners honoring her memory and vowing never to forget the bright young girl taken far too soon.
