Walker County Center of Technology on Lockdown After Shooting Incident in Jasper
The Walker County Center of Technology in Jasper was placed on lockdown Tuesday following reports of a nearby shooting incident. According to Sheriff Nick Smith, the suspect connected to the incident remains at large, prompting an urgent law enforcement response and heightened concern for student safety.
The Incident
Authorities say the shooting occurred in the area of Devon Drive off 20th Avenue East in Jasper. Details surrounding what led to the gunfire have not yet been released, but police have confirmed that the suspect is still on the run and considered armed and dangerous.
The suspect is described as a white man in his early 40s, last seen wearing dark-colored clothing. Jasper Police Department is actively searching the area, and multiple law enforcement agencies are working together to track the individual.
School Lockdown and Safety Measures
Out of an abundance of caution, the Walker County Center of Technology was placed on lockdown shortly after the incident was reported. Dr. Dennis Willingham, Walker County Superintendent, confirmed that the school is following all established safety procedures.
“Our first concern is making sure students are safe and secure,” Willingham said, emphasizing that staff and law enforcement are working in coordination to maintain order and calm within the school.
At this time, there have been no reports of injuries to students or staff at the Center of Technology. Parents are being asked not to come to the campus until authorities give clearance, as additional traffic could interfere with police operations.
Community Alert
The Jasper Police Department is urging residents in the Devon Drive and 20th Avenue East area to remain indoors and report any suspicious activity. Officers are patrolling neighborhoods and searching wooded areas near where the suspect was last seen.
Law enforcement officials stress that anyone who spots an individual matching the suspect’s description should not approach him, but instead immediately contact police.
Ongoing Investigation
Sheriff Nick Smith noted that investigators are working quickly to piece together the circumstances of the shooting while ensuring the safety of the community. Additional information, including the motive and whether anyone was injured in the original shooting, has not yet been released.
The Walker County Sheriff’s Office, Jasper Police Department, and other agencies remain on high alert until the suspect is located and taken into custody.
Public Appeal
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to call Jasper Police Department or the Walker County Sheriff’s Office immediately. Residents can also provide anonymous tips if they prefer.
Moving Forward
As the situation develops, parents, students, and the Jasper community are anxiously awaiting word of the suspect’s capture. The lockdown at Walker County Center of Technology will remain in place until law enforcement confirms that it is safe to lift restrictions.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and updates will be shared as soon as new information becomes available.
